PSV Eindhoven host Feyenoord at the Philips Stadion on Sunday with the Eredivisie title race already tightening. Feyenoord arrive unbeaten in the league and four points clear at the top after nine games, while PSV sit in pursuit with 19 points and the pressure of keeping pace at home.

That gap is why this match has become the one people are checking first. Feyenoord have seven wins and two draws from their opening nine matches, and they are on a run of five straight league wins after beating Telstar 4-3 at the BUKO Stadion last weekend. PSV, by contrast, have mixed results behind them in domestic play, including back-to-back away defeats against Twente and ADO Den Haag around a 2-0 win over Heerenveen on October 9.

Guus Til gives PSV a clear route into the match. He scored the decisive goal in Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Porto at the Estadio do Dragao and now has five goal contributions in the league this season, with five goals and one assist. That matters because PSV have shown they can still find a result in the Champions League, even after a 1-0 loss against RB Leipzig in Germany on October 13 and a 1-1 draw with Shakhtar Donetsk earlier in the campaign.

Feyenoord have had their own European stumbles, losing 1-0 against Real Betis in their last Champions League match and 5-1 to Barcelona on the opening day, but their domestic form has stayed clean. The problem for PSV is that the sharpness shown in Europe has not carried over reliably into the league, and the need is immediate against a side that has already built momentum at the top.

The recent history between PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord suggests the game should produce chances. Five of the last seven meetings have featured at least three goals, and Til was on target in PSV’s 3-0 victory over Feyenoord in their last encounter in February. PSV are the reigning three-time Eredivisie champions, while Feyenoord have 16 league titles of their own, so the meeting on Sunday is not just about form. It is about whether PSV can cut the gap now, or whether Feyenoord leave Eindhoven still in control of the race.
