Ole Miss Coach? Willie Fritz lands on Bear Bryant Watch List again at Houston

Willie Fritz is back on the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Watch List after turning Houston into one of the season’s sharpest rises. The 66-year-old coach is being recognized again as his latest rebuild has pushed Houston from four wins in 2024 to 10 wins in 2025.

That is why the Ole Miss coach search interest has landed on Fritz now: his name keeps surfacing with the season’s awards race, and this latest nod comes after Houston finished No. 22 in the final Poll and beat LSU in the Texas Bowl. The program also made its first bowl appearance since 2022 and posted its first 10-win season as a Power Conference school since 1990.

The Bear Bryant watch list is one of the sport’s quiet measures of whether a coach has done more than win a few games; it tends to reward the kind of season that changes a program’s standing. Fritz has made a habit of that. He was a finalist for the award at Tulane in 2022, won the Dodd Trophy and the George Munger College Coach of the Year Award that same year, and led Tulane from 2-10 to 12-2 in one season before arriving at Houston on Dec. 3, 2023.

Houston’s climb has not come from smoke and mirrors. This season the Cougars were 6-1, reached No. 14 and beat No. 18 Oklahoma State at home in a ranked matchup. They also earned their first ranked road win since 2017 at No. 25 Arizona State. Those results help explain why Fritz is being viewed again as a coach who can move a program quickly when the pieces finally fit.

The part that complicates the celebration is the one that makes the rise more striking. Houston had only four wins in 2024 before the turnaround, which means the jump to national relevance was sudden even by college football standards. The recognition from the American Heart Association-backed watch list reflects that whiplash: Fritz did not merely stabilize Houston, he changed the shape of the program in a single season.

What comes next is the same question that follows every watch list update: how long the committee keeps Fritz in the frame if Houston’s season keeps carrying weight. For now, the answer is already clear enough for Houston and for Fritz, who has again turned a rebuild into an awards conversation.
