Bowling Green is headed to Buffalo, New York, on Saturday, Oct. 24, for the first game of a two-road-game stretch, and the timing makes the matchup matter right away. The Bowling Green Falcons and the Buffalo Bulls both enter MAC play at 2-1, with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. at UB Stadium.

For Bowling Green, the game is a chance to steady a season that has already turned choppy. The Falcons are 2-5 overall after losing 32-31 in overtime to Ball State at home, and they gave up 240 rushing yards in that defeat while managing only 98 on the ground themselves. Eddie George said his team has to establish the run and stay balanced, but he also made clear that the response has to start by handling what Buffalo does best.

The Bulls come in at 4-3 overall and on a small surge after back-to-back wins over Toledo and Massachusetts. That run has been built around Messiah Burch, who leads the conference with 118 rushing attempts for 661 yards, averages 5.6 yards per carry and has scored two touchdowns. He has topped 100 yards in four straight games, becoming the first UB tailback to do that since Jaret Patterson in 2019, which gives Buffalo a clear identity at a time when Bowling Green is still searching for its own.

George did not soften the challenge. He said Buffalo is efficient running the football and that his defense will need to clog the holes and pressure Jason Wright, who ranks second-to-last in average passing yards at 143.3 and has six touchdown passes against four interceptions. The Falcons were unable to record a sack against Keldric Luster the previous week, and that leaves a direct question hanging over this trip: whether they can slow a run-first opponent without losing the battle up front again.

The history only sharpens it. Bowling Green leads the all-time series 13-9, but the Bulls beat the Falcons 28-3 in last year's meeting at Doyt L. Perry Stadium, a result that sits alongside a longer pattern in which Bowling Green won 11 of the next 14 games after the first meeting on Sept. 23, 2000, then only two of the last seven. Both of those recent wins came on the road, which is the only part of that trend Bowling Green can lean on as it opens another road stretch in New York.

That makes Saturday more than a routine conference date. Bowling Green is trying to recover from a one-point overtime loss and fix the run game at the same time, while Buffalo is carrying the better record and the stronger rushing rhythm into a game that can tighten the MAC race quickly. If the Falcons are going to leave UB Stadium with more than another close call, they have to solve the ground game before the Bulls make that the whole afternoon.
