Racing de Santander will host Espanyol at Campos de Sport de El Sardinero on Saturday with both clubs level on eight points from nine La Liga matches. The meeting puts two sides with the same record of two wins, two draws and five defeats under the same pressure, even if they arrive in different places in the table.

Racing are 17th and Espanyol are 16th, separated by little more than the order of the standings. Both have taken only one point from their last four games, which is why this one matters now: it is not just another league fixture, but a chance to stop the slide before their attention shifts to the Copa del Rey later in the week.

Racing come in after a 2-0 defeat to Osasuna and a 2-2 draw with Valencia on October 11, and they have not won since beating Alaves 2-1 on September 12. Espanyol, meanwhile, lost 1-0 at home to Atletico Madrid and have also gone without a win in Spain's top flight since beating Osasuna 2-0 on September 12. Those results explain the mood around both teams better than the table does.

There is, though, a small edge in the head-to-head for Espanyol that sits alongside Racing's more recent success. Racing beat Espanyol 2-0 when the sides last met in February 2024, but three of the last four meetings were won by Espanyol, including a 3-1 La Liga victory in March 2012. That history underlines how little between them has been settled by reputation alone.

The match also carries a sharper edge because the line between the clubs is so thin despite matching records. Racing are the reigning Segunda Division champions and their task this season is to consolidate at this level, while Espanyol are trying to steady themselves after a difficult opening run. Racing will need to check on Simon Eriksson because of a shoulder injury, with Sergio Canales set to continue as the number 10, while Espanyol will be missing Kike Garcia and must make a late check on Jofre Carreras before deciding whether he can play.

Yassir Zabiri has scored seven times in nine appearances this season, and Roberto Fernandez has six in nine, which gives the game a hint of individual quality even if the form around them is flat. After Saturday, Espanyol go to Sestao in the Copa del Rey and Racing head to Ribadesella, so neither side has long to dwell on the result. What happens at El Sardinero may not solve either club's season, but it will show who can carry a little momentum into the next match that matters.
