Knicks Game Tonight: assistant coaches miss rings at Tuesday title ceremony

The New York Knicks opened Tuesday’s title ceremony with banners overhead and a problem on the floor: assistant coaches were handed empty boxes instead of championship rings. The delay came as the team marked its championship celebration ahead of the season opener.

That is why the Knicks Game Tonight search matters now. Fans looking for the latest from the celebration are finding a story that is bigger than one night’s ceremony, because the team is still distributing more than 275 championship rings and jewelry worth more than $3.7 million to players, coaches, employees and other members of the Knicks family.

The missing rings were not a mystery of supply so much as timing. The coaches had not yet been fitted for the rings, which left them with presentation boxes on Tuesday while the rest of the ceremony moved ahead. For a team trying to turn a long celebration into something polished, the image landed awkwardly: a championship handout with nothing inside.

The ring rollout also carried a second, less visible problem. Last month, some team employees in business operations and at Madison Square Garden received an email saying “your Employee Championship Ring is here,” along with a note that they could choose from a pair of options at no cost to them. Employees who clicked the link were then told they had failed a phishing test and would have to attend a mandatory cybersecurity class.

An MSG Sports spokesperson said the company had previously sent out the email as a simulation of a phishing attack designed to strengthen security against hackers. The spokesperson also said MSG had recently been hacked and extorted using an employee login and password obtained through a similar phishing attack, and said using the rings as a lure to get employees’ attention was an unfortunate mistake. That explanation may satisfy the security team, but it does not erase the confusion or anger the email created among people who thought the rings were finally arriving.

The ceremony itself still had the weight of a real celebration. The Knicks ended a 53-year championship drought when they defeated the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals, and on Tuesday the team displayed two new banners in the rafters, including one honoring the NBA Cup win during the 2025-26 season. But the ring delay shows that the handoff phase is not finished, and the question now is simple: when the assistant coaches and the other recipients are finally fitted, the real keepsake will arrive without another surprise inside the box.
