Duke and Virginia will meet Friday night in Charlottesville, Virginia, with both teams trying to shake off losses that changed the feel of their seasons. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. ET on on Friday, Oct. 23.

That is why the matchup is drawing attention now. Duke had been 4-0 straight up and against the spread before falling to North Carolina and Georgia Tech, while Virginia has three other wins but has not lived up to the momentum it built after its wide-margin win over NC State in August. Since then, the Cavaliers have dropped three games, including a 10-point loss to SMU as a 9.5-point underdog, a 31-point loss to Florida State after entering as a favorite, and an 11-point loss to West Virginia as an 11.5-point favorite.

The numbers suggest why this game could be tight. Duke beat Illinois outright as a 6.5-point underdog and has held opponents to 107.6 rushing yards per game, with a run defense ranked 24th nationally. Virginia runs the ball more than 40 times per game, but Duke’s front has been steady enough to keep games manageable. At the same time, Virginia’s secondary has been strong, ranking 18th in opponent passing yards per game and fifth in opponent completion percentage. Both defenses are allowing fewer than 23 points per game and fewer than 340 yards per game.

The pace points in the same direction. Duke ranks 81st in seconds per play over its first three drives and 88th in situation-adjusted pace, while Virginia is slower at 117th out of 138 teams and 104th, respectively. That is part of why the suggested betting combination leans toward Duke +2.5, Under 47.5 and first-half Under 23.5, a three-leg play that carries a combined payout of 4.80x.

Virginia still has enough pieces to make this awkward for Duke, but recent results have made the Cavaliers harder to trust as either a favorite or an underdog. Duke, meanwhile, has already shown it can win in the role of outsider and has the cleaner defensive profile entering the night. Friday’s game should show whether Virginia can steady itself before the losses define its ACC season.
