Michael Porter Jr remains without extension as Nets weigh trade options

Michael Porter Jr. has not signed a contract extension with the Nets, and his status is now part of the conversation around what Brooklyn does next. He is in the last year of his deal, and with no extension in hand, he has become a player to watch.

The reason the search is getting louder now is simple: the contract clock is running. Brian Windhorst said on the Hoop Collective that Porter is worth watching because he has not been extended, and Brian Lewis reported that he remains on a $40.8 million expiring contract after becoming eligible for a new deal on July 6. If he is still unsigned, Lewis wrote, his name can stay in trade talk right up to the Feb. 11 deadline, with Brooklyn left to decide whether to keep him, move him for future assets or use him in an upgrade deal.

That uncertainty sits next to a season that should have made this easier. Porter averaged 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists last season after coming to Brooklyn from Denver, even while missing 30 games. He also said last month on Curious Mike that he lost some edge after missing his first All-Star berth, admitting, “I kind of let my foot up off the gas because there was really nothing we were playing for anymore.”

There is still no sign of panic from either side. Porter has continued to say he wants to stay, and Sean Marks has spoken about how much he likes him as both a player and an individual. But that does not erase the friction in the story: a strong season, a big contract and a front office that has to treat an unextended player as both a building block and a possible asset.

The next real checkpoint is June 30, when Brooklyn still has time to offer Porter a deal. Until then, the question is not whether he matters to the Nets. It is whether they decide he matters more as part of their future or as the kind of contract that can be turned into something else.
