Jaime Jaquez Jr. is now on the clock. After being traded from the Heat to the Milwaukee Bucks in early July, he is eligible for a rookie scale extension until October 19, leaving Milwaukee a short window to decide whether to lock in a young wing who has already finished three NBA seasons.
The timing matters because Jaquez is no longer just a player with upside; he is a player coming off his best professional season. He appeared in 75 contests in 2025/26 and averaged career highs of 15.4 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.7 assists while receiving 34 first-place votes for the Sixth Man of the Year award and finishing runner-up to Keldon Johnson. That is the kind of season that can push a front office to act early, especially when the player is already eligible for a rookie scale extension.
Jaquez’s case did not begin with this trade. The Heat selected him with the 18th overall pick in the 2023 draft after he capped a standout run at UCLA, where he averaged 17.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.5 steals as a senior and earned Pac-12 Player of the Year honors. He carried that production into his rookie year in Miami, putting up 11.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.0 steals per game in 75 games, then slipped in 2024/25 as his minutes and role shrank.
That dip is part of what makes the next decision more complicated than the raw numbers suggest. Jaquez was out of Miami’s rotation at the end of 2024/25, yet he followed that with a strong rebound in 2025/26, which leaves Milwaukee weighing recent form against the fact that he has only one season of sustained top-end production. The Bucks do not need to decide today, but the deadline is fixed. If they want him on a rookie scale extension, the move has to come before October 19.
For Milwaukee, the question is not whether Jaquez can help. It is whether his 2025/26 surge is enough to justify long-term money now, before a fuller picture forms in his first season with the team. By the time the deadline arrives, the Bucks will have to choose between betting on the version of Jaquez that just broke through or waiting and letting the season answer for them.
