Mikel Brown Jr. will not start when the Brooklyn Nets open the season against the Charlotte Hornets on October 21. The guard is expected to come off the bench with a minutes restriction after a rolled left ankle early in camp, leaving Brooklyn to begin its 2026-27 season without the lineup it had been planning.

That change matters because this is Opening Night, the first official game for a Nets team trying to reset after a rough stretch and a promising draft. The game starts at 7:30 p.m. ET, will air on the YES Network and stream on DAZN, and the search for answers around Brown is tied directly to the first real look at this roster.

Brown’s case is more than a simple injury note. He played 18 minutes and scored 15 points in his lone preseason game, enough to hint at a bigger role, but the ankle has pushed him into a controlled opening-night return. That leaves Keon Ellis in line to start, with Michael Porter Jr. at the other forward spot, Julius Randle making his Nets debut and Day’Ron Sharpe at center. With Nic Claxton dealt to Chicago in the Randle trade, Brooklyn’s opening five is already different from the one it may have imagined when camp opened. A locked-in cap of 24 minutes would shape the rotation from the first quarter on, forcing the Nets to stagger ballhandling and scoring around a bench role that was never supposed to be the lead story of night one.

The Hornets bring their own absences, with Kon Knueppel, Coby White, Grant Williams and Kylan Boswell all out. Their offseason trade of Lamelo Ball to the Timberwolves already changed the shape of the matchup, and the team meets Brooklyn on Opening Night for the second year in a row. That leaves the game less about the names missing from the injury report than about which club handles the first disruption better. For Brooklyn, the answer begins with Brown watching the start from the sideline, then trying to make his minutes count when he gets in.
