Floyd Mayweather has reopened the door to Floyd Mayweather Vs. Conor McGregor, saying on the PBD Podcast that the two may lock up again. The comment brings fresh life to one of combat sports’ biggest crossover fights, even as McGregor is sidelined by a knee injury.
Mayweather did not leave much room for mystery when asked about the old rivalry. “Actually, I think me and Conor McGregor may lock up again,” he said, adding “Yeah, absolutely” when pressed about a possible rematch. He also made clear that, if the money made sense, he would sit down and talk it through for business sake, even if that meant having dinner to put the fight together.
The interest in the matchup is easy to understand. When they met nine years ago, Mayweather beat McGregor by technical knockout in Round 10 and closed his career at 50-0. The disclosed payday from that fight gave Mayweather $100 million and McGregor $30 million, which is why even a hint of another meeting draws attention fast. That first bout was one of the most lucrative nights either fighter ever touched, and it still hangs over every new comment about the pair.
Mayweather also tied the conversation to McGregor’s rise outside the cage, saying, “You mean the guy that took my whole swag and took it over there to the UFC?” He went further, saying talking does not win fights and that the crowd cannot fight for anyone once the bell rings. For Mayweather, the message was simple: when it is time to do business, then it is time to do business.
Still, the latest remarks do not sound like a warm reunion. Mayweather said he is not really upset with anyone, but he also said McGregor is not his friend and that he does not have to see him. That leaves the rematch talk in an awkward place, with public interest high but no sign that either side has gone beyond words.
McGregor’s side of the picture is less flexible. He is currently sidelined with a knee injury suffered in his comeback fight against Max Holloway at UFC 329 this past July, a bout that ended in 69 seconds. McGregor has repeatedly said he wants to finish the final fight of his UFC contract in 2027 and then become a free agent, which makes any boxing return a separate question from his MMA plans.
For now, the biggest update is not that a fight is booked. It is that Mayweather has once again said the fight can happen, and he has left the door open wide enough for the market to keep listening.
