The Indiana Fever could re-sign Kelsey Mitchell to a max deal and still try to bring back Sophie Cunningham and Myisha Hines-Allen, but the math would leave little room to spare. That is the latest projection around Mitchell as the Fever weigh how much of their core they can keep together.

The reason the question has urgency now is simple: Indiana's offseason planning is already being measured against a projected cap that could grow to $7.9 million, or 13 percent, while the team also has to think about Caitlin Clark's future money. Bleacher Report's view is that Mitchell remains central enough to justify a max deal, which would make her one of the hardest pieces to replace if the Fever let her walk.

That projection matters because Indiana is not trying to rebuild from scratch. The Fever won 28 games in the regular season and looked strong around Clark, but the same roster still needs significant help defensively for the postseason. That creates a hard roster choice: keep the offensive core intact, or use the cap room to patch the problems that showed up when the games got tighter.

Bleacher Report also framed the Fever's cap picture as something that cannot be looked at in isolation. Indiana should account for Clark's potential EPIC renegotiation in 2027 and a three-year extension beginning in 2028, which means any deal for Mitchell now has to fit inside a longer financial plan. The money gets tighter still if the Fever try to bring back Cunningham and Hines-Allen at the same time.

The pressure is sharpened by the kinds of upgrades Indiana may need to chase elsewhere. Ariel Atkins has earned five All-Defensive Team honors and won a championship with the Washington Mystics in 2019, while the Los Angeles Sparks are retooling after trading Kelsey Plum in-season and losing Nneka Ogwumike to retirement. The Dallas Wings also went from 10 wins in 2025 to 27 wins in Paige Bueckers' second season, a reminder that roster balance can change quickly when a team finds the right pieces.

For the Fever, the next move is not just about keeping Mitchell. It is about whether they can keep her, add defense, and still leave enough cap flexibility for what comes after Clark's next contract cycle. If Indiana chooses to spend on Mitchell at the top of the market, the rest of the offseason may be decided by what it can no longer afford.
