Jeff Teague has taken a sharp swing at the 76ers, calling them the most overrated team in the league and predicting they will finish No. 4 in the Eastern Conference. He made the comments on the latest episode of the Club 520 Podcast, putting a public brake on the growing buzz around Philadelphia's star-heavy roster.
The timing matters because the 76ers were widely viewed as one of the summer's biggest winners after acquiring Jaylen Brown in a trade with the Celtics and signing LeBron James in free agency. Philadelphia was also the top response in the annual NBA GM survey for which team made the best offseason moves, which is exactly why Teague's pushback landed with force. “Everybody got a lot of high hopes for the Sixers,” he said. “I'm not a fan.”
Teague's case is simple: the roster may look imposing on paper, but there are only so many shots, touches and touches of responsibility to go around. He said, “It's too much sacrifice. Who's going to sacrifice all that?” and argued that sudden changes to Nick Nurse's rotation could create problems once the season starts. That is the heart of his concern, not talent, but how the pieces fit when the ball starts moving.
That friction shows up most clearly in the names attached to the roster. Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe are expected to work alongside Brown, James and Joel Embiid, a mix that looks powerful until the role changes begin. Teague said he believes those issues will surface throughout the 2026-27 season, and he warned that the first real slump could turn the discussion inward fast. “The first time they go on a four-game losing streak and they start saying something to Bron, like, 'Well, you know, Bron is old,' some s— is going to happen,” he said.
That is why the debate around Philadelphia is bigger than a preseason opinion. The team now sits at the center of a familiar test: whether a roster built to win immediately can stay aligned long enough to do it. The 76ers will spend the season answering the same question Teague raised in public, and the answer will decide whether this looks more like the 2007-08 Celtics or the 2021-22 Nets.
