South Alabama and Marshall meet Tuesday night in a Sun Belt showdown that has the road favorite projected to leave with the better of it. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2, and the betting case leans to South Alabama to cover -2.5 or -3.

The reason the line has drawn attention is Marshall’s record against the number, which has been ugly all season. The Thundering Herd are 3-3 overall but 1-5 against the spread, and they have spent much of the year making backers sweat, nearly losing to Gardner-Webb as a 24.5-point favorite and to Middle Tennessee State as an 11.5-point favorite before falling to Coastal Carolina as a 4.5-point home favorite.

That Coastal Carolina loss is the kind of result that keeps showing up in the handicap. Marshall still piled up more than 505 total yards, but it gave the game away with five turnovers, including three fumbles and three interceptions. That is the problem buried under the yardage: the offense can move the ball, but mistakes have repeatedly turned good drives into bad bets.

South Alabama brings a different profile, and that helps explain why it is being treated as the cleaner side. The Jaguars’ worst loss came against Kentucky, a 45-21 defeat as a 20.5-point underdog, but their offense has been far more productive than Marshall’s. One team in this matchup is averaging just 22 points per game, while the other is averaging nearly 40, and South Alabama ranks seventh in points per game. Marshall, by contrast, ranks 111th in points per game and 64th in total offense at 406.5 yards per game.

The total of 31.5 also makes sense given the defensive numbers on both sides. South Alabama ranks 130th in points allowed, Marshall ranks 116th in points allowed and 120th in yards allowed per game, and both defenses are allowing more than 33 points per game. The first-half over is also in play because both teams sit in the bottom 30 in first-half points allowed, with each defense surrendering more than 17 points per game before halftime.

Tempo should help too. South Alabama ranks 61st in adjusted pace, while Marshall ranks 52nd, so neither side is built to drag this into a slow, low-event game. That makes the number feel tight in the wrong way for a team with Marshall’s resume, especially one that is just a few plays away from being 1-6 instead of 3-3.

That is the real test entering Tuesday night: whether Marshall can clean up the turnovers before they decide another game. If it cannot, the market’s lean toward South Alabama and the over-lean on the first half make sense for one more week.
