The Tennessee Titans released defensive tackle Jordan Elliott on Tuesday after an incident at their team facility, cutting ties with a player who had been part of the defensive rotation early in the season. Elliott did not play in Sunday's 26-20 win over the Indianapolis Colts.
The move comes with immediate impact because Elliott had appeared in five of the Titans' first six games and finished with 11 combined tackles. Tennessee signed him to a two-year, $8 million deal in the offseason, expecting help from a 2020 third-round pick who had been a regular starter for both the Cleveland Browns and the San Francisco 49ers.
What happened at the facility was not made public. Tennessee did not disclose any details about the incident, leaving the release as the only confirmed outcome of a day that abruptly changed the roster and raised questions the team has not answered.
For Coach Robert Saleh and general manager Mike Borgonzi, the decision could also be read as a reset. Jordan Elliott's exit is likely to open more snaps for second-year tackle Nazir Stackhouse, who played 15 defensive snaps in Week 6 and had three tackles in the Titans' first victory.
That leaves the larger story unresolved, even as the roster move is clear: Elliott is gone, the team has stayed silent about why, and the next defensive shift may already be underway without him.
