The Hanshin Tigers said on October 19, 2026, that Teruaki Sato will be posted for Major League Baseball teams this offseason, putting one of Nippon Professional Baseball’s most productive hitters on the market. Once the posting process opens after the NPB season ends, Sato will have 45 days to reach a deal.
That clock is the reason the announcement lands now. Sato, 27, will turn 28 in March, and at least five MLB clubs have already shown interest in a player who can handle third base and right field. He is coming off MVP honors in 2025-26 and a 2026 season that included the Central League triple crown, 39 home runs, 106 RBI and a.306/.383/.609 line in 614 plate appearances.
For clubs scanning the market, the appeal is plain. The free-agent class is thin on premium bats, and Sato’s last two seasons give him a profile few available hitters can match. He is not just a power bat either; the versatility matters, too, because teams weighing an MLB move for a 27-year-old corner infielder do not have to pigeonhole him at one spot.
Still, the posting window may not stay open long enough for a normal chase. The transactions freeze is set to begin on December 1, and if Sato does not have a contract finalized before then, he would have to wait out the lockout before talks with Major League teams can resume. That is the part that complicates a process that already carries the usual uncertainty of any star coming over from NPB.
If he signs before the freeze, the Tigers collect the posting fee and Sato begins his Major League tryout on schedule. If he does not, he returns to the Hanshin Tigers for the 2027 season. Either way, the next move belongs to the calendar now, not to rumor, and the first answer should arrive before the month runs out.
