Christian McCaffrey said his sleep has been great after he and Olivia Culpo welcomed their second baby, Roman, on Sept. 29. The San Francisco 49ers star made the comment on Thursday while speaking to reporters ahead of a game against the Washington Commanders.
When NBC Bay Area reporter Anthony Flores asked about his nighttime routine, McCaffrey answered, “Sleep's great! My family's down in L.A. right now while my wife's recovering,” then added, “Don't tell her this, I'm sleeping fantastic,” in the locker room. It was a blunt little reveal from a player who has spent the past two weeks in the middle of a very public family milestone.
McCaffrey and Culpo announced Roman's arrival in a joint Instagram post on Saturday, Oct. 10, with Culpo writing, “Roman Augustus McCaffrey 🤍” and showing black-and-white photos from the hospital. The images included McCaffrey by her side, the newborn in their arms, and the couple's 14-month-old daughter, Colette, looking on. Culpo also shared a garden photo with Roman and Colette, and wrote in an expired Instagram Stories post, “Heart is exploding,” as the family marked the new addition.
The timing matters because the question around McCaffrey's sleep came just days after the public announcement and while Culpo was still recovering in L.A. McCaffrey said she is “coming back up soon” to the San Francisco area, but he did not give a date. That leaves the family in a temporary split between recovery and work, with McCaffrey still answering questions and Culpo staying out of the spotlight for now.
The couple, who married in 2024, first told the public they were expecting baby number 2 in May, when Culpo posted, “Best birthday gift ❤️ Baby #2 coming soon 🥹,” on her 34th birthday. She has continued documenting the pregnancy journey online and has said she has leaned on McCaffrey while balancing work and motherhood. For now, the clearest update is simple: Roman is here, Culpo is recovering, and McCaffrey is not losing any sleep over it.
