Golden State opened the WNBA Finals with a 68-64 win over Atlanta on Saturday, and Kaila Charles was at the center of it. She played 30 minutes off the bench, scored seven points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked two shots, then helped seal the game with a late steal on Rhyne Howard.

The box score only tells part of the story. Charles led Golden State in rebounding, which mattered in a game where every possession tightened as Atlanta leaned on a seven-player rotation and Gabby Williams scored 16 points in the second quarter alone. Charles answered with a corner 3-pointer in the second quarter and the kind of physical work that kept Golden State from losing control of the game when the pace tilted. That production came from the bench, which has been one of Golden State's postseason advantages.

For Charles, the performance fit a larger arc that has been building all season. She was waived by Dallas last season, then moved through a series of hardship deals before Golden State kept her on a rest-of-contract deal for the full year. By the time the team signed her to a two-year, guaranteed contract ahead of the 2026 season, she had already become part of the rotation. Before Game 1, she was averaging 6.4 points and 5.0 rebounds in the postseason, but Saturday was the night her role expanded into something bigger.

Coach Natalie Nakase said Charles's engine was on full throttle and that her fight was unmatched, adding that she was exactly what the team needed. Veronica Burton also pointed to the plays that decided the game, saying Kiah Stokes and Kai made the game-winning plays. The balance of those comments fits the night itself: Golden State got a one-possession Finals win because its bench produced the kind of rebounding, defense and hustle that do not show up in one clean sequence, but decide a game all the same.

Game 2 is next, and the question is not whether Charles will be part of the plan. It is how much more Golden State can ask of her after she already emptied the tank in Game 1.
