Joey Porter Jr. is questionable for tonight’s Dallas-Green Bay matchup after hurting his ankle in practice this week. He logged two limited practices and one full practice, but his status was still uncertain as the game approached.
That is the immediate reason his name is driving search traffic now: Porter, traded out of Pittsburgh after a de facto hold-in with the Steelers, could still end up unavailable on the night Dallas needs him most. He already missed Week 5 with an illness, then returned to play against the Texans two weeks ago before this week’s ankle issue cropped up.
Porter’s path to Dallas was shaped by more than football. He wanted out of Pittsburgh because of contract structure, and the trade ended the standoff that had left him on the Steelers’ 53-man roster in Weeks 1-4 while he was ruled out each week. The Dallas side of the move has another layer, too: the Cowboys are interested in keeping him long term, and Porter said after the swap that he hopes to finish his career in Dallas.
The injury update is also separate from the contract questions that have followed him. WFAA’s Ed Werder reported the ankle issue, and the timing matters because Porter is due for free agency in March unless he signs an extension or receives a franchise tag. That makes every availability update part of the bigger picture, even if this latest one has nothing to do with the deal he wanted to escape in Pittsburgh.
For now, the next decision is simple and immediate. Porter wants to play tonight, Dallas wants him available, and the game will decide whether the trade pays off in the short term before the contract questions return in March.
