Southern Nazarene University said Thursday that sophomore safety Tyler Ulrich died five days after sustaining a traumatic injury during a game against Ouachita Baptist. He was 21.
For Southern Nazarene, the announcement turned a Saturday injury into a loss that now hangs over the rest of the season. The school said Ulrich was hurt in the 49-14 defeat and received medical attention for nearly an hour before being transported to a hospital.
Ulrich was from Azle, Texas, and was in his third season at Southern Nazarene. He had become a steady part of the defense, with 16 starts in 20 games, six of them this year, and he ranked third on the team with 36 tackles.
The school did not reveal the cause of death or the nature of the injury. That silence leaves the most important question unanswered even as the facts around his final hours have become clearer: Ulrich died in the hospital after days of treatment, but Southern Nazarene has not said what exactly happened to him on the field.
The impact reached beyond the football program immediately. Southern Nazarene canceled its game at Southwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday and held a campuswide prayer chapel on Tuesday in his honor. School president Keith Newman said Ulrich died surrounded by family, teammates and dear friends, while coach Dustin Hada remembered him as a man of God and a quiet, loyal worker filled with joy.
Southern Nazarene, a Division II school in Bethany, Oklahoma, is now left to carry the loss of a player who mattered on the field and in the locker room. The team was 1-5 when the death was announced, and the season has already been overtaken by a question no scoreboard can answer.
