Cowboys Backup Quarterback Joe Milton poached by Eagles in roster twist

Joe Milton is gone from the Cowboys' practice squad, and the Eagles now have to carry him on their active roster for at least three games. The move gives Philadelphia another quarterback option at a moment when Jalen Hurts is out indefinitely and Dallas suddenly needs a new emergency arm.

The timing is what makes this matter now. One day after the Eagles ruled Hurts out indefinitely after finding a superficial blood clot in his leg, they moved for Milton and set up an immediate depth shuffle for both teams. Tanner McKee will get the initial nod at quarterback for the Eagles, while Milton will compete with McKee and rookie Cole Payton as Philadelphia sorts out the next stretch without Hurts.

For the Cowboys, the loss is more than a paperwork move. Brian Schottenheimer said he sees it as a chance for Milton and added that it did not catch him by surprise. He also said everyone knows what is going on with Hurts, that the club recognizes Milton as a young player with incredible talent, and that he is sad to lose him but hopes he gets every opportunity. Dallas now has a vacancy on the practice squad and still wants an emergency arm behind Dak Prescott and Sam Howell.

That is a sharp turn for a player who entered training camp trying to prove he could be QB2 in Dallas. Milton's work in Oxnard pushed Howell to the limit, then he played in the first two preseason contests before fading in the preseason finale. The Cowboys waived him during final roster cutdowns in late August, then brought him back to the practice squad after he cleared waivers. At 26 years old, he had just worked his way back into the picture before Philadelphia took him away.

The structure of the move matters as much as the move itself. Because Milton is being added from another team's practice squad, Philadelphia has to keep him on its 53-man roster for a minimum of three games. That gives the Eagles a usable body behind Hurts' replacement plan, but it also means they are committing a roster spot to a quarterback who only recently looked like Dallas' backup answer. There is even a chance the story folds back on itself in Week 7, when Milton could see the Cowboys again on Oct. 26.

For now, the Cowboys must fill the hole he left, and Philadelphia must decide how much room it wants to give Milton beyond the next few games. That is the business of quarterback depth in this league: one team's spare arm can become another team's urgent need overnight.
