Brad Gagnon is already looking past Kirk Cousins. The analyst predicted the Las Vegas Raiders will bench the 38-year-old later in the season and turn to Fernando Mendoza, with Week 12 at the Browns singled out as the likeliest place for the move.
That prediction lands now because the Raiders are 3-2 even after back-to-back losses, which keeps the season alive while leaving the quarterback picture unsettled. Gagnon framed Cousins as a bridge to the rookie No. 1 overall pick, and said Week 12 would give Cousins plenty of rope while letting Mendoza marinate.
Cousins has not been the problem in every game, but he has also not made the question go away. Gagnon wrote that the veteran has generally played well for a 3-2 team, yet has been far from a model of consistency, while the Raiders were listless against the Patriots in Week 5. That mix is why the conversation has moved from whether Mendoza is the future to when the switch comes.
Mendoza, for his part, is acting like a player who expects the moment to arrive. He said Coach Sullivan, Andrew Janocko and Coach Kubiak keep stressing the need to stay engaged, and said he does that by reading out the play call or repeating it to Coach Sullivan, then working through the reads so he is ready at any point. The approach fits the role he has been given for now, with another reminder that he is not just waiting around for a jersey change.
The hard part for the Raiders is that the math still gives them room to wait. A 3-2 record and a realistic playoff path argue for keeping Cousins in place, but Gagnon pointed to a dreadful stretch between now and the end of November as the kind of schedule that can force a decision before the season’s final act. Unless the Raiders catch fire, Week 12 at the Browns looks less like a suggestion than the checkpoint that will decide whether Cousins keeps bridging or Mendoza starts crossing over.
