Za'Darius Smith's injury designation changed Thursday from concussion/neck to just neck, a sign he cleared concussion protocol even as the Atlanta Falcons kept him on the limited list. He still was not a full practice participant, leaving his status for Sunday open.
The update matters because Smith missed last Sunday night against the Baltimore Ravens after leaving the previous week's win over the Saints with the injury. For Atlanta, any progress from him comes during a short week of work before a Sunday matchup against the Chicago Bears, and the defense needs to know whether one of its edge options is close to ready.
Thursday's practice report offered the clearest read yet. Smith was limited, not full go, which usually means a player can take part but is still being managed carefully. In his case, the concussion piece is no longer on the report, but the neck issue remains the reason he is not yet back to full participation.
That distinction matters. Clearing concussion protocol removes one barrier to playing, but it does not mean Smith is free of the injury that sent him out of the previous game and kept him out against the Ravens. The Falcons are getting a better sign than they had earlier in the week, but not the kind of clean bill of health that would settle Sunday one way or the other.
Atlanta's defense is already working through other injury concerns, which makes Smith's situation more important than a routine midweek update. The club has also been managing multiple issues at cornerback, while Michael Penix Jr. was a full participant in his second consecutive practice on Thursday after being unable to finish Sunday's overtime loss because of a rib injury. That leaves Smith as one of the more consequential question marks heading into the Bears game.
For now, the most useful takeaway is simple: Smith is closer than he was, but not all the way back. If he can turn a limited practice into a full workload before Sunday, the Falcons may have a chance to add him back in time. If not, the neck issue will keep his return on hold for at least another week.
