Nolan Smith trade watch: Eagles reportedly seek starting-caliber offensive lineman

The Philadelphia Eagles are still in the market for help on the offensive line, and Howie Roseman is now being linked to a search for a starter rather than a stopgap. A couple of NFL sources told Jeff McLane that Roseman was shopping for a starting-caliber offensive lineman as of Wednesday.

That matters because the Eagles' line has already been stretched thin. In Week 5, they had to use a specific configuration after Lane Johnson retiring and the Eagles trading Cam Jurgens away, leaving Mailata and Steen as fixed starters while Lampkin and Majors made their first NFL starts. The setup has forced the team to play through growing pains at a position group that usually anchors everything else they do.

McLane said Roseman had been making calls about blockers that might be available via trade, which is the kind of work that can point in two different directions. A starting-caliber lineman can mean a short-term rental for a push this season, or it can mean a player the Eagles see as part of the longer answer. But the timing cuts against an easy read: the Eagles lost a game since McLane made the report, and that kind of result can make a quick, one-off fix feel less likely even as the need stays real.

Drew Kendall is part of the reason the picture is still unsettled. His knee injury is not clear, the Eagles did not put him on injured reserve, and he could return at center to replace Majors. That gives the team a possible internal answer, but it does not erase the pressure to add depth or stability before next month, when the NFL trade deadline arrives.

For now, the question is not whether the Eagles want help. They do. The question is whether Roseman is looking for a temporary patch or a player sturdy enough to change the line’s shape for the rest of the season. Until next month’s deadline passes, that search will keep hanging over Nolan Smith and the rest of the Eagles’ roster picture.
