American Football shocker: Five of Top 7 AP teams fall on historic Saturday

Five of the seven best teams in the Top 25 lost on the same day in the regular season for the first time in history, turning Saturday into one of the wildest ranking swings the sport has seen. Georgia, Alabama, Texas, Notre Dame and Indiana all went down, and the top of the poll now faces a scramble that could push Miami to No. 1.

The number that makes the day hard to dismiss is not just five losses, but where they landed. It was the first time the No. 1 and No. 2 teams both lost on the same regular-season day since 2012, and it happened while Miami was beating Florida State 43-35 in double overtime, putting the Hurricanes in position to take the top ranking. That kind of collapse at the top does not leave much room for debate when the poll is updated.

Georgia’s loss carried the biggest shock. The Bulldogs fell 27-24 to Auburn as a 20 1/2-point favorite, ending a 53-game winning streak against unranked teams after Gunner Stockton threw two interceptions and lost a fumble with less than a minute left. Alex McPherson finished it with a 34-yard field goal on the final play, and Auburn won in Athens for the first time since 2005.

Alex Golesh called for patience after the upset and said Auburn would keep building “one game at a time.” The result fit the kind of Saturday that seemed to keep getting worse for the top teams, with Alabama and Texas also losing as favorites by a touchdown or more, and Notre Dame and Indiana falling as well. The last remotely similar day came on January 2, 1989, when five of the top eight teams lost, but this one went further because it hit the top seven in the regular season and included a road win over the nation’s No. 1 team for the first time since 1994.

That is why the next poll matters so much. The order at the top is expected to shift quickly, and the College Football Playoff picture will be reshaped by a day that broke the usual rhythm of a season. The unanswered question is not whether the rankings will move, but how far the damage reaches after a Saturday that knocked the sport’s strongest teams off balance at once.
