’s FPI reshuffled its top end after Week 7, and Auburn was at the center of it. The biggest jolt came from Auburn’s 27-24 road upset of Georgia, a win that followed a 14-0 deficit and flipped into 24 straight points for Auburn.
That result gave Auburn a 7.0% shot at the College Football Playoff and a 96.2% chance to get to six wins, a sharp reminder that one road win can change the math fast. FPI is updated weekly, and this week’s version produced a new No. 1 without naming the team in the report, which is exactly why the ranking board is drawing attention now.
Auburn was not the only team moving. BC beat Pittsburgh 27-21 to improve to 3-3, and FPI put BC at 10.6% to reach six wins. Colorado also gained ground in the ratings even after losing to Utah 27-24, a strange kind of progress for a team that dropped to 2-4. In the Big 12, Colorado still had the lowest six-win chance at 13.7%.
Cal took the hardest fall of the group, losing 41-7 at home to Wake Forest and sliding to 3-4. FPI gave Cal a 14.3% chance to reach six wins and a bowl, and Stanford sat below Cal in the ACC basement. The week’s movement fits the same pattern across the board: Auburn surged on the strength of a road upset, BC steadied itself, Colorado moved up despite the loss, and Cal kept sinking.
What remains unanswered is the one number that would make the whole picture complete: the new No. 1 in FPI. Until that is named, the update is clear on its biggest mover, but not yet on the team sitting above everyone else.
