Sonay Kartal reached the first WTA 1000 final of her career at the Dongfeng • Voyah Wuhan Open on Saturday, beating Jelena Ostapenko 7-6, 7-6 in a semifinal that went to the wire. The 24-year-old Briton is through to her second career final on the WTA Tour Driven by Mercedes-Benz, and her run in Wuhan has now turned a comeback into a breakthrough.

It is the kind of result that explains why the Wuhan Open was drawing attention on this day: Kartal is back in the final stretch of a run that has already included wins over world No. 48 Anhelina Kalinina, No. 9 seed Belinda Bencic, No. 15 seed Jasmine Paolini and, in the quarterfinals, Elina Svitolina, whom she beat 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. That victory over Svitolina was her first in three meetings with the Ukrainian and only her second career win over a top-10 opponent.

Kartal’s route to the final is also why this result has landed with such force. Since returning to competition last month, she has not only represented Britain in the Billie Jean King Cup and reached the third round in Beijing after beating world No. 31 Wang Xinyu, she has now put together a 13-0 record in 2026 in WTA-level main draws when she wins the first set. When she takes the opening set, she has not been beaten this year.

That sort of surge would have sounded unlikely only weeks ago. Kartal had been sidelined for six months with a back injury, during which her ranking slipped from No. 54 to No. 170, and she said she had been ready to return by late August but chose not to rush the recovery. She added that she did not think she would find this level so quickly, even though she knew she had already lost six months on the tour.

The scale of the achievement is bigger than one semifinal, too. Since the Tier I and WTA 1000 format began in 1990, Kartal has become only the second British player to reach a final at this level, after Johanna Konta, who did it in Beijing in 2016, Miami in 2017 and Rome in 2019. Kartal has said she is proud of the level she has produced and wants to keep building on it, but the unanswered question now is the one that follows every breakthrough of this kind: who, exactly, will be waiting for her in the final?
