DETROIT — The Detroit Red Wings will try to turn a steady run into a longer one Saturday night when they face the San Jose Sharks at Little Caesars Arena, with puck drop set for 7 p.m. ET. Detroit enters with points in three consecutive outings and a 2-3-2 record, and this is the last time it will be at home until Oct. 29.

That makes the matchup more than just another night on the schedule. San Jose comes in at 4-3-0 with eight points after opening a six-game road trip with a 4-3 shootout victory over the Nashville Predators, while Detroit has six points and is looking for a fourth straight contest with at least one point. The Red Wings also have to do it in a building where the pressure is already built in by the calendar.

Todd McLellan said the group has been resilient through everything around it and has adjusted its structure enough to check better than it had before. But he also made clear the job is not finished. Detroit still needs more offense and a cleaner penalty kill, even after the club has managed to keep collecting results without playing its sharpest all-around hockey.

That balance showed up in Thursday night’s 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers, when Daniil Tarasov stopped 17 shots and Andrew Copp scored the deciding goal after Anton Johansson got his first NHL goal. Lucas Raymond said the Red Wings have grown in a lot of areas and described the defensive game as strong in long stretches, while noting that the team stayed patient and was rewarded late against Philadelphia.

Raymond has four assists through seven games and shares third on the club scoring list with Viktor Arvidsson and Justin Faulk, a reminder that Detroit’s scoring has been spread around rather than driven by one line. Alex DeBrincat’s seven-year contract extension on Wednesday only added another layer to a week that already had plenty of attention on the Red Wings.

For Detroit, the immediate test is simple. It has already shown it can grind out points while tightening up structurally, and now it has one last home date to prove that recipe can travel. If the Red Wings leave Saturday with another result, they will spend the next stretch away from Little Caesars Arena knowing the point streak is more than a short burst — it is a base they can build on.
