Arkansas and Vanderbilt meet Saturday at FirstBank Stadium in Nashville with the SEC's last two winless teams in conference play. One of them will leave 6 p.m. kickoff with its first league victory, and the other will stay stuck at the bottom of the standings.

The game is drawing attention now because the records are close to each other, but the stakes are not. Vanderbilt is 3-3 overall and 0-3 in the SEC after a 52-17 loss to Ole Miss last week that ended its 10-game home winning streak. Arkansas is 2-4 overall and also 0-3 in the SEC, with a 14-game conference losing streak hanging over a matchup it has historically handled well in Nashville.

That history matters because Arkansas has never lost at Vanderbilt. The Razorbacks are 4-0 all-time there, including a 31-28 win in October 2011 that turned after they trailed 28-20 early in the fourth quarter. Jerry Franklin returned a Zac Stacy fumble 95 yards for a touchdown, Tyler Wilson hit Jarius Wright for a 2-point conversion to tie it, and Zach Hocker later drilled a 42-yard field goal with 6:53 left before Carey Spear missed from 27 yards with 8 seconds remaining.

But that past has not protected Arkansas in the SEC since 2012. The program has the conference's worst winning percentage in league play over that span at 23%, and it has had four winless seasons. Vanderbilt has not exactly separated itself from that tier either, with a 26% SEC winning rate since 2012 and four winless seasons of its own. What makes this meeting feel different is that both sides arrive with first-year starting quarterbacks, and that adds uncertainty to a game that should already feel tense enough on its own.

Vanderbilt leaned first on Blaze Berlowitz the starter for its opener before turning to Jared Curtis by Week 3, while Arkansas has KJ Jackson in charge at quarterback. Diego Pavia is still part of the backdrop for Vanderbilt after helping push the program to 10 wins last season and into College Football Playoff contention, but Saturday is about who steadies first in the present. The next answer comes at FirstBank Stadium, where kickoff is set for 6 p.m. and one team finally has to break through.
