The Utah Jazz used their last traditional roster spot to claim Tony Bradley off waivers just a few days before the regular season. The move sends the veteran center back to Salt Lake City, where he began his NBA career.
Bradley was on the New York Knicks’ roster through training camp and preseason, but the team chose a different direction and waived him. For Utah, that made him available at the exact moment the Jazz needed to complete the roster they will carry into the season.
Shams Charania reported that the Jazz claimed the center off free agency waivers, and the fit is easy to explain. Bradley was Utah’s No. 28 pick in 2017, and he spent his first three NBA seasons with the team before moving on to the Philadelphia 76ers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers and Atlanta Hawks. He now arrives at year nine of his career after spending the past eight seasons in the league.
The return also changes the center picture in a straightforward way. By claiming Bradley, Utah adds a familiar big man to a depth chart that now has one more established option in the middle as the regular season approaches. That matters because the Jazz did not make this move for nostalgia; they made it because the final roster spot had to be filled with a player who could step into the group immediately.
There is still a wrinkle in the story. Bradley had been competing for one of the Knicks’ final places, which means Utah’s gain came directly from New York’s decision to go in another direction. That is the reality of late preseason roster business: one team closes a door, and another team uses the opening to solve an immediate need.
Bradley’s next role in Utah has not been spelled out, but the bigger point is already clear. The Jazz have brought back a former first-round pick who knows Salt Lake City, and they have done it at the precise moment the roster needed to be set for opening night.
