Mel Kiper has put out his first board for the 2027 NFL draft, and it lands with a blunt message: his No. 1 is already clear. The analyst released a top 25 list after roughly half of the 2026 college football season, giving an early snapshot of a class he says could be really, really good.

The timing is why readers are looking at this now. Kiper said the list is not a mock draft and not a prediction for how Round 1 on April 29 in Washington D.C. will unfold, but it is still the first national order of the class built from film and conversations around the NFL. That makes it more than a casual exercise. It is the starting point for how the 2027 NFL draft will be discussed over the next year.

The early board also reflects how much talent sits at the top of the class. Kiper said it includes elite wide receivers, standout defenders and a bunch of excellent quarterback prospects, with the top 25 carrying a ton of quarterbacks. That matters because quarterback groups tend to define the draft conversation long before the full picture is clear, and this one already looks deep enough to shape it.

Drew Mestemaker is one of the names that gives the ranking its edge. He does not turn 21 until January and has only 20 career starts, yet Kiper still included him among the players worth tracking. His rise has been fast. In 2024 he walked on at North Texas as a quarterback, became the starter there in 2025, and in 2026 threw for more than 4,000 yards before transferring with Eric Morris to Oklahoma State.

That is the friction in Kiper’s approach: he insists the board is not a mock draft, but the list still assigns a No. 1 and creates a full top 25 order. He is ranking a class that is still moving. Players can rise and fall, and some could go back to school for another year before turning pro, which means the board is both a snapshot and a warning label. A name near the top now is not locked there, even if Kiper says the No. 1 spot might not change at all.

For now, the important part is that the list will not sit still. Kiper said it will be updated regularly through draft day, which means this first version is only the opening read on a class that could keep changing as the season continues. The quarterbacks may keep climbing, the defenders may keep making noise, and the No. 1 spot may stay where it is. That is the point of releasing it now: to put a first marker in the ground while there is still time for the board to move.
