Joel Klatt projects Iowa to Orlando Citrus Bowl, not the College Football Playoff

Iowa’s hot start has put the Hawkeyes in a position few expected this deep into the season, but Joel Klatt’s latest projection sent them somewhere else entirely. He had Iowa missing the College Football Playoff and heading to Orlando for a meeting with Kentucky in the Citrus Bowl.

That matters now because Iowa is on a bye in week seven, a pause that turns the season into a midseason checkpoint. The Hawkeyes have built a solid case for their first College Football Playoff appearance, and their second half includes only one currently ranked team, which is why the path still looks open even as the projection points in the other direction.

Klatt did not hand out win totals in his projection, but the bowl assignment gave Iowa a clear landing spot if the season ended the way he expects. It also sharpened the difference between buzz and actual selection math. A team can be hot, and still need the committee-style résumé to keep holding up when the schedule tightens.

That is where the friction sits. Iowa has won nine of its last 10 against Minnesota and Nebraska and is 23-7 against Minnesota, Wisconsin and Nebraska combined, the kind of run that feeds the belief this team can keep pushing toward the playoff. But Klatt also expected the Hawkeyes to drop at least one game to Northwestern, Purdue or Illinois, a reminder that one stumble in the wrong spot can change the whole picture.

The remaining road runs through those final six regular-season games, including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Northwestern, with Iowa traveling to Evanston for the Northwestern game. If the Hawkeyes protect that stretch, the Citrus Bowl projection will look premature. If they do not, Orlando may be exactly where the season was headed all along.

Joel Klatt’s call does not close Iowa’s playoff door. It does show how narrow the margin is now, with the Hawkeyes carrying momentum into the second half and no room to assume the opening will stay wide.
