Roger McQueen made his NHL debut for the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday night, skating in No. 95 and starting the next step of a career that has been wrapped in a Disney-sized shadow since the draft. He played 11:26, had one shot on goal and no points in a 4-2 loss to the Calgary Flames, but the more lasting image was how quickly the conversation around him reached back to the Cars connection that has followed him since the Anaheim Ducks took him 10th overall in 2025.

That search interest is easy to understand. McQueen was called up from the AHL on Monday night, then took his customary rookie lap before the Ducks' home game, with Sheryl Crow's Real Gone playing in the background. The timing turned a standard promotion into a scene built for attention, especially after the Ducks had already handed him a No. 95 jersey when they drafted him. It was the number tied to Lightning McQueen, and it was impossible to miss that the joke had been written into the story long before he stepped on the ice.

Scott McQueen said that is exactly the kind of spotlight his son has to live with now. He said people want to “fly under the radar” and just play, and added that Roger wants to prove himself “as a player and not so much, you know, as a Disney character.” That is the friction here. McQueen did what a prospect is supposed to do — get to the NHL, take the ice and start earning shifts — but the debut was framed by a character tie-in he did not choose and cannot control. For a player trying to turn a draft-day novelty into a hockey career, that distinction matters.

Joel Quenneville said McQueen kept getting better as camp went along and was one of the players pushing for a job, while also stressing that there is upside in what could become a very good career. The Ducks have now given him the first NHL game, the first minutes and the first test against a team that beat them 4-2. What remains unresolved is how long they keep him after this look, because for now the call-up feels like a start, not a guarantee.
