The Philadelphia 76ers trimmed their camp roster before Friday night’s preseason finale against the Boston Celtics, waiving Duke Miles and Saint Thomas and replacing them with Cris Carroll and Taye Fields on Exhibit 10 contracts. The move gives Carroll and Fields a path to stick with the organization through the Delaware Blue Coats, while Miles and Saint Thomas were cut loose as the team narrowed its end-of-camp group.

That matters now because the final preseason game is the last clean checkpoint before the roster decisions start to harden. For a team still sorting the edges of its bench, a late swap like this is less about box-score noise than about keeping developmental options open while also clearing room for one more look on the floor.

Carroll arrives as a small forward with a college track record that suggests he can help in a role built on minutes, not headlines. At Youngstown State, he started 59 of 66 games over two seasons, played 25.1 minutes a night, shot 46.9% from the field and averaged 13.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.1 steals per game. He came out of high school as a three-star recruit, which fits the profile of a player still trying to turn steady production into a longer pro opportunity.

Fields brings a different kind of case. He recently played at North Alabama and spent his Summer League stint with the team, then backed it up in the 2024-2025 season by starting all 35 games he played. He averaged 29.2 minutes per game, shot 53.5% from the field, made 35.7% of his three-pointers and posted 11.2 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. That stat line helps explain why he stayed in the picture when the 76ers made the late move.

The friction is in the contract math. Exhibit 10 deals are not guaranteed NBA spots, and they do not lock anyone onto the regular-season roster. They are a practical bridge: if Carroll or Fields eventually joins the Delaware Blue Coats, the contract can make that transition worthwhile. If not, the 76ers still used Friday’s shuffle to keep two more players attached to the system while sending Miles and Saint Thomas out of the picture.

The next step is simple and unforgiving: the preseason finale against the Boston Celtics will be the last chance to see whether these end-of-camp moves stay as a footnote or become the opening move for Carroll and Fields with the Delaware Blue Coats.
