No. 15 Tennessee pulled out a 24-17 win over Arkansas on Saturday in Fayetteville, and the finish mattered as much as the result. George MacIntyre, making his first career start, threw for 247 yards and a touchdown as Tennessee rallied in the fourth quarter to take control late and leave with its first win in Fayetteville since 2001.

The game turned when it was tied at 17 with 4:07 left. After Tennessee was pinned inside its own 10 following an Arkansas punt, DeSean Bishop broke free for 59 yards to set up the go-ahead score, then finished the job four plays later with an 8-yard touchdown run. Tennessee's defense then forced Arkansas into a three-and-out with 1:36 left, sealing a road win that pushed the Volunteers to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Southeastern Conference.

That was the part that will show up in the record. The part that will linger is how Tennessee got there. MacIntyre finished 18 of 29 with two interceptions, and the offense spent stretches looking far less comfortable than the final score suggests. Arkansas, meanwhile, grabbed its first lead in an SEC game this season with back-to-back touchdown drives to open the second half and briefly had enough momentum to make Tennessee chase the game.

Josh Heupel said MacIntyre handled the rough spots well and kept playing the next snap, calling it a winning performance. He also pointed to the reason the freshman was on the field at all: Faizon Brandon was dealing with a shoulder injury and did not rep during the week, leaving Tennessee to turn to MacIntyre on short notice. DeSean Bishop carried the rest of the load, rushing for 138 yards, while Arkansas quarterback KJ Jackson finished 15 of 27 for 155 yards and a touchdown.

The result matters now because Tennessee heads next to No. 6 Alabama on Saturday with a road win in hand and a quarterback question still open. Brandon's return will shape the next decision, but for one night in Fayetteville, Tennessee found enough from MacIntyre and Bishop to survive a messy finish and keep moving in the SEC race.
