Atlanta United heads into Wednesday night’s trip to CF Montréal with two lineup holes already marked out. Will Reilly is out because of an ankle injury, Tomás Jacob is out because of Yellow Card Accumulation, and Tata Martino is preparing to adjust again after a 3-1 loss to FC Cincinnati just four days earlier.
The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Oct. 14, and it is the kind of fixture that now asks for more than a simple reaction. Atlanta United is still in a late-season push, and Martino has made clear that selection starts with how players recover from one game to the next and whether they can hold a rhythm when matches come every three days. That matters now because the schedule is tight enough that the coach is not just picking his best XI, he is picking the one that can survive the week.
One player who has made the case for more minutes is Giuliano Galoppo. He has started two consecutive matches and played 86 minutes in each, and he said he has been feeling better and better as his rhythm returns. For Atlanta United, that kind of form is not a side note. It is part of the calculation Martino is making as he tries to manage recovery while keeping the group competitive on the road.
The other reason this game draws attention is that Atlanta United already beat CF Montréal 3-1 in May, but the shape of the matchup has changed. The October roster is significantly different from the one that won then, and five starters from that earlier result are no longer on the roster. That is the kind of detail that makes a repeat result much harder to assume, even before the lineup card is filled out.
Martino also has a newer layer to weigh on the other side. CF Montréal added Alexis Sánchez over the summer, and he now joins Prince Nwosu and Daniel Rios in the front three. Martino coached Sánchez at Barcelona in 2013-14, and he said then the forward was more of a decisive one-on-one player, attacking space, scoring goals and setting others up, while now he sees a player more involved in buildup and the elaboration of play. That gives Atlanta United a familiar opponent in an unfamiliar form.
So the question for Wednesday is less about the May result than about who can absorb the workload now. Atlanta United already knows Reilly and Jacob will not be available, and Martino has signaled that changes are coming because of recovery and rhythm. What remains to be seen is which players get the call to replace them when the match begins in Canada.
