Arsenal will meet Lille for the first time in competitive football when the clubs face each other in the Champions League at Emirates Stadium. It is a new line in the record book for Arsenal, who have already played 10 different French teams in competitive action, but never this one.

That is why the fixture is already drawing attention. Lille come into it after finishing third in Ligue 1, a result that lifted them back into the Champions League after a season in which they were tipped to struggle once Jonathan David, Lucas Chevalier, Bafode Diakite and Angel Gomes were gone. Instead, they stayed in the top five for most of the campaign and finished behind Paris Saint-Germain and Lens.

The club that Arsenal will face has a long and uneven history. Lille Olympique Sporting Club was founded in 1944 after the merger of Olympique Lillois and SC Fives, won the league and cup double in its second season, and collected two titles and five French Cups within a decade. It later fell as far as relegation in 1956, then returned to Europe in 2001/02 before winning again in 2021. This will be Lille's ninth Champions League campaign, another sign of how far the club has come since its leaner years.

There is also a more immediate edge to the tie. Davide Ancelotti was installed after Bruno Genesio's departure, and he inherits a side that has already shown both resilience and volatility. Lille opened the winter after four defeats in a row, then responded with a 13-game unbeaten run that carried them into the Champions League places. They also lost their French Cup hopes in the round of 32 against Lyon and exited the Europa League at the last 16 stage after Aston Villa beat them 3-0 on aggregate.

Ancelotti arrives with a coaching background that began at Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid under Carlo, after ending his playing career at 22 and spending his only senior loan spell at Borgomanero in 2008/09. Lille have played at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy since 2012, in a stadium with a capacity of 50,186 and a retractable roof, but this trip to Emirates Stadium is a different test altogether. For Arsenal, it is a first competitive meeting with a club that has rebounded again and again; for Lille, it is another chance to prove that last season was not the exception.
