Chicago Fire FC will finally host Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Tuesday night, ending a delay caused by wildfires and putting Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller on opposite sides of an MLS field for the first time. The match is set for 8:30 pm ET on Apple TV.
That is why the fixture is drawing attention now. Lewandowski arrived in Chicago this summer and has 6 goals and 2 assists in his first 11 MLS appearances, while Müller joined Vancouver in August 2025 and has produced 19 goals and 11 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions. The two spent eight seasons together at Bayern from 2014 to 2022, won eight straight Bundesliga titles and built one of Europe's most prolific attacking partnerships before heading to MLS.
The timing only raises the stakes. Chicago enters Tuesday fifth in the Eastern Conference with 42 points, one point behind Charlotte FC in the race for a top-four finish and home-field advantage in Round One of the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. Vancouver sits atop the Western Conference with 50 points, so this postponed game carries real weight for both clubs, not just for the reunion.
There is still one wrinkle. Lewandowski returned to Chicago early from international duty after a yellow-card suspension kept him out of Monday's UEFA Nations League match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Chicago was still evaluating his status after that trip. Gregg Berhalter said Monday that he has no predetermined minutes restriction for Tuesday, while Mauricio Pineda said Chicago expects nothing less than three points and called Vancouver a very intense team. Berhalter added that late-season matchups come with strong table implications and said, “And that's the beauty of it.”
So the game should tell two stories at once: whether Chicago can keep pace in the Eastern Conference race, and whether Lewandowski is ready to turn a long-awaited meeting with Müller into a full night on the pitch.
