Harry Kane equalled Peter Shilton’s England appearance record against Czechia, winning his 125th cap and moving level with the former goalkeeper at the top of the national team’s all-time chart. It was a landmark night for England’s captain, and one that came with the game still carrying real weight in Nations League Group A3.

The scale of the achievement is plain enough. Shilton needed 21 years to reach 125 England caps. Kane got there in 11, a span that began when he came on for Wayne Rooney against Lithuania in 2015 and scored his first international goal 79 seconds later. Now he stands beside the man who once set the benchmark, with England looking for a stronger finish in the group before the quarter-finals come into view.

England’s starting XI underlined the sense of continuity around Kane’s milestone. Jordan Pickford was in goal, with Trent Alexander-Arnold back at right-back after starting in Prague the previous week and Jarell Quansah switching into the centre after playing there in Rijeka. Myles Lewis-Skelly filled in for the injured Alex Scott, Eberechi Eze came in on the left flank, and Morgan Rogers also started. Kane led the line as England faced a Czechia side that had lost its last four matches and arrived fourth in the group with no points.

That gap matters because the table was still live before kick-off. England were second in Group A3 with six points from three matches, behind Spain on nine, ahead of Croatia on three and Czechia on zero. England’s problem is no longer whether Kane belongs in the conversation with Shilton. It is whether this group position can be turned into the kind of finish that keeps the road to the next round in England’s hands.
