For the Steelers, Joey Porter Jr. was also ruled out after being listed as questionable, taking another defender off the field before kickoff.
Hill’s absence was the sharper blow for Cincinnati because it came just as the Bengals tried to extend an unbeaten start built on wins over the Buccaneers and Texans. The Steelers, meanwhile, entered after a Week 1 win over the Falcons and a road loss to the Patriots in Week 2, a start that made every available defender matter more as the game approached.
There was also a broader cost behind the headline absences. Andrei Iosivas had already been placed on IR after tearing a ligament in his thumb, thinning the Bengals further before a game that would test them in a first division matchup for both sides. The Steelers’ situation was less clean than Hill’s: Porter was confirmed out only after being marked questionable, while the other inactive names on that side were not part of the reported update.
That leaves the story centered where it started, on Hill and a defense that had to keep going without him. If Cincinnati was going to protect its early season edge, it had to do it without a player still feeling the effects of the Achilles injury that kept him out for a second straight week.
