The Cleveland Guardians are in the postseason again, and they got there Thursday with a 1-0 road win over the Boston Red Sox. It clinched their third consecutive playoff berth and sent them back into the Mlb Playoff Bracket with another late charge.
The timing matters because this was not a team that cruised into October. The Guardians were 61-66 on Aug. 19 after a 1-0 loss to the San Francisco Giants, five games under.500 and looking like a club that had little margin left. Since then, they have gone 22-10, a run strong enough to turn the season and secure a spot in the American League playoffs for the eighth time in the last 10 seasons.
That surge has been built around pitching and timely production from players who changed the shape of the roster. Gavin Williams leads the AL with 244 strikeouts, Cade Smith has become the second-most valuable reliever in the AL by fWAR, and Parker Messick could finish in the top three of AL Cy Young voting. On the offensive side, Jo Adell and Nathaniel Lowe, acquired on Aug. 3, have combined for 11 home runs since joining Cleveland.
Steven Kwan has also been part of the turnaround. He hit.225/.332/.282 in 89 games in the first half, then posted a.355/.440/.429 slash line after the All-Star break, a stretch that ranks seventh among all position players in fWAR since then. José Ramírez, meanwhile, had hamate bone surgery in June and has started to hit better lately, giving the lineup another key piece as the games have gotten bigger.
The friction point is hard to miss: the Guardians reached the playoffs despite being five games under.500 as recently as Aug. 19. That kind of recovery leaves one question still hanging over the bracket picture — not whether Cleveland belongs, but where it will land and who it will face first. For now, the Guardians have done the harder part by forcing their way back into the chase for their first World Series title since 1948.
