That approach matters now because the first two weeks of the season have already shown how much the scoring can swing. Week 1 nearly broke the record books, with 791 points across 16 games tying a mark set back in 2012 and 11 of 32 teams scoring 30 or more points. Week 2 looked far less explosive, with league-wide scoring settling closer to 22.5 points allowed per team per game, which is exactly why managers are searching for Week 3 defensive rankings before lineups lock in.
The early numbers also explain why the rankings carry more weight than a simple matchup list.
