Max Dowman is expected to be part of Arsenal’s squad for Wednesday evening’s Carabao Cup third-round match against Ipswich Town, a quick return to the first-team picture after he sat out the trip to Sunderland on Saturday. Marli Salmon is also expected to be involved.
Dowman and Salmon both played for the under-21s on Monday in a 4-1 defeat to Cobham Next Gen at Meadow Park, and the teenager’s next step now looks set to come in the cup rather than from the start. Mikel Arteta has made clear that Dowman will have his chance, but he will have to earn his minutes like anybody else.
That line matters because Arsenal are not handing out appearances simply to keep a story moving. Arteta said the club know the talent they have and need to help Dowman keep developing, but he also wants the player to show enough in training and in matches to justify every minute. Dowman’s name has already been linked with first-team progress before, but the way Arsenal are managing him suggests the club see him as a long-term project rather than a short-term fix.
There is also a practical reason for the cautious approach. Arsenal go into the Ipswich match with William Saliba sidelined, Ben White having limped off holding his groin on Saturday and missing training on Monday, and Cristhian Mosquera carrying a muscular problem with no update provided. Jurrien Timber came back from injury at Sunderland, and Ezri Konsa could also play at right-back, giving Arteta options as he balances a third consecutive away game before Arsenal head to Brighton on Saturday.
For Dowman, the opportunity is real but not guaranteed. Arteta said he will look at the players’ eyes and expects them to want to play and improve, but he also said they will review the Sunderland game and want more. That leaves the teenager on the edge of the squad, close enough to be in the conversation and still far enough away that the final step has to be earned on the pitch.
Marli Salmon’s situation is different but just as telling. He has not featured for the first team since Arsenal’s FA Cup win over Mansfield in March, so his expected involvement against Ipswich would be another sign that Arteta is willing to reach into the younger group while managing a busy stretch. Whether Dowman gets beyond a squad place and into actual minutes is the part that remains unresolved, and that is what will matter most when Arsenal walk out on Wednesday evening.
