The Las Vegas Raiders have overhauled their linebacker group for the 2026 NFL season, adding Quay Walker, Nakobe Dean and Segun Olubi in free agency. It is a clear sign that John Spytek did not intend to carry the same room into next year.
That matters now because the Raiders are not making a minor adjustment. They are previewing a defense that is being reworked around a new set of linebackers, and Dean sits near the center of that change. He is one of the most intelligent linebackers in the league, and he brings the kind of range that can matter on every snap. He can make tackles, cover receivers and blitz, which gives Rob Leonard more ways to use him than a typical early-down linebacker.
The move also tells you what the Raiders were trying to correct. Much of last season, they trotted out Devin White, Elandon Roberts and Jamal Adams at linebacker. That group carried a heavy load, but the front office clearly decided that formula could not be the plan again. The addition of Dean, Walker and Olubi points to a deeper unit and a more varied defensive structure heading into 2026.
Dean’s appeal is obvious. He is described as a proven veteran, and his versatility should make him useful in a more diverse role this season. But the same thing that makes him attractive also creates the biggest concern around him: staying healthy. If he holds up, he gives the Raiders a player who can move between jobs instead of being locked into one lane. If he does not, the defense loses one of the pieces it added to make the whole group more flexible.
That leaves the Raiders with a simple next step and one unresolved question. Leonard is expected to use the linebackers in a broader way, which suggests Dean will not be asked to do just one thing. The open issue is how often that versatility will matter if health becomes the limiting factor. For now, the Raiders have changed the shape of the room. What remains is whether Dean can stay on the field long enough to make that change count.
