Marshall Faulk is in his first year as head coach, and Southern finished last in the SWAC in 2025, which makes this part of a rebuild that is still being assembled week by week. The Jaguars do not have to win to make the game useful; they only have to make Houston work for cleaner execution than it managed against Oregon State.
Fritz has made clear he wants Houston to take another step before the Big 12 opener, and this is the kind of week that shows whether that is happening. The Cougars have the ranking, the home field and the better record, but they also have the exact problems that can turn a comfortable night into a warning sign.
