UNLV heads to North Texas on Saturday with a defense that has started to look like a unit that knows what it is doing. The Rebels held Hawaii to six points in a 21-6 win, and that was enough to turn a road trip into a real test of whether the improvement carries over.
That is why Jake Pope’s view matters now. He said the Hawaii win was “a great feeling and something we can build off of,” and he pointed to a defense that is “more detail oriented than last year” and “more consistent with our plays and gap schemes and coverages.” Those are the kinds of words a team uses when it thinks the small things are starting to show up on game day, not just in practice.
The numbers back that up. UNLV had five sacks against Hawaii, a sign that the front was getting home and the defense was closing space instead of chasing it. Dan Mullen also gave credit to the defensive staff on Monday for the early-season performance, a nod that fits with the way the Rebels have looked through two games. After the season-opening loss to Memphis, where a few explosive plays changed the shape of the night, UNLV responded with a much tighter effort.
North Texas is a different sort of problem. The Mean Green outgained Indiana 367 yards to 365 yards and ran for 152 yards to 134 in a 52-16 loss that got away in the fourth quarter, so the raw numbers show an offense that could move the ball and punish mistakes on the ground. Paul Guenther said North Texas has “two really good backs that can make you miss in space” along with the quarterback, and he added, “Three guys we have to tackle this week.”
That is where the matchup sharpens. UNLV can point to better tackling and cleaner coverage, but North Texas has runners and a quarterback who can stretch those habits to the edge. Guenther said the Rebels have put in the foundation to adjust from week to week, and that “our guys have a lot better understanding of what’s going on,” but this game asks for that understanding to hold up away from home against a different style of offense.
Pope said the answer starts with preparation. “Watching film,” he said. “Preparing the right way.” He added, “With North Texas, we just need to know their pre-snap plan and what they’re about to do.” If UNLV’s defense keeps the same discipline it showed against Hawaii, Saturday will tell whether that improvement is real or only early-season noise.
