Sales left Maranhão at age 9 after Fluminense held a trial at Palmeirinha in São Luís, and he was approved in two evaluations before heading to Xerém, Rio de Janeiro. He never lived in the youth dormitory, because his father, Júnior, left Maranhão to stay close to his development. Sales said his father has been the person who believed in him from the start, and that everything he does is also for the grandfather he lost about three years ago.

When he was 7 years old, he suffered a serious accident on a futsal court in São Luís after trying a sliding tackle on a broken surface and a wooden splinter pierced his leg. The injury required surgery, 32 stitches and about five months away from the ball. Sales said the splinter went in sideways and that if it had gone 3 cm deeper it could have reached the bottom of his leg. He also said he did not do physiotherapy after the operation, rested at home and later returned to play at Palmeirinha, even as the stitches became inflamed more than once because he did not always keep still during recovery.
That background helps explain why this week matters so much. A player who once had to recover largely on his own is now training with Fluminense's professionals and travelling in the match group for Atlético-MG. Whether he gets minutes or stays only on the bench is still unresolved, but the call-up itself marks the moment when a youth prospect from Maranhão moves from promise to the edge of a debut.
