Mesa’s homer started a three-run second, and the Rays kept stacking runs with three more in the fourth and an insurance run in the seventh. They did it with nine singles, three walks, a hit by pitch and three stolen bases, while Mateo drove in two runs with an RBI single and Diaz added an RBI on a sacrifice fly. Simpson and Mesa each scored twice, even though Mesa was also thrown out at home on one running play, a reminder that the box score was cleaner than the night felt.
Jax was the central reason the Rays could keep leaning on the offense instead of chasing it. He allowed one run over five innings and gave up only one other hit and one walk, but he did not pile up many whiffs or strikeouts, which fit a game that never fully settled into easy territory. Ty Johnson gave up a run on a walk and a hit while recording two outs, Cam Booser finished the sixth, and Cole Sulser and Steven Matz were near perfect over the final three innings.
That makes the result more useful than pretty. The Rays had come into Atlanta after a series loss to the New York Mets, and the Braves were still the team they had to get through before turning to an early afternoon getaway game the next day. Tampa Bay had not had a win in Arlington since 2022, and while that detail belonged to another place, the broader point held here too: a road win that comes with a series in hand matters most when it follows a stretch that has not felt easy.
The next day brings another quick turnaround, with Nick Martinez and Martin Pérez scheduled to start. For the Rays, the bigger story is already in the books: a 7-2 win, a long homer from Mesa, and a five-inning rebound from Jax that helped finish the job before the series ended.
