The Kansas City Royals finish their homestand this week against the Arizona Diamondbacks with Noah Cameron, Michael Wacha and Daniel Lynch IV lined up to start the three games. The series opens with Cameron against Derek Law, and the headline matchup arrives in Game Two, where Michael Wacha is set to face Corbin Burnes.
That is why this series is drawing attention now. Burnes has not made an MLB start since June 1, 2025, and he is projected to return to the mound in the second game. For the Diamondbacks, that makes the middle game the center of the week. For Kansas City, it is another test in a stretch that has left the club 5-5 over its last ten and coming off losses in its last two series.
The Royals have reason to believe their offense can carry some of the weight. Salvy has been one of the few steady bats in September, hitting.304/.360/.609 with a.969 OPS and a 167 wRC+, while reaching base with at least one hit in all but one game. He has added two home runs, six RBIs and a double, and he went 5-for-12 with a home run against the Blue Jays in the series finale. Against the Diamondbacks, his career OPS is.751.
There is still a catch for Kansas City. Eduardo Rodriguez will not be starting in this series, but Burnes' expected appearance gives the Diamondbacks a chance to plug a hole in a rotation that ranks 21st in fWAR. That matters because Arizona is in the playoff hunt, and Burnes is trying to find his rhythm again after Tommy John Surgery.
Game Three closes the set with Daniel Lynch IV against Merrill Kelly, and that may be the clearest read on where this series can swing. If Burnes looks sharp in his return, the Diamondbacks gain more than a one-game boost. If he needs time, the Royals could leave the homestand with a cleaner reminder that Salvy's September surge is no small thing.
