Leonard Moore has not played a down of his junior season, and he already opens it as one of the most closely watched cornerbacks in college football. Notre Dame is set to face Wisconsin at Lambeau Field on Sunday night, and Moore goes into that season opener as a consensus CB1 and a projected early first-round NFL draft pick.
That is why his name is drawing attention now. Moore, who is 6-foot-2 and 197 pounds, enters the 2026 season with draft boards already treating him like a front-end 2027 NFL draft prospect. The Mock Draft Database has him No. 4 on its consensus board. NFL Trade Rumors rates him as the No. 1 overall pick. The Athletic, Bleacher Report, Yahoo! Sports and others have him going second. For a player who has not yet taken a snap this fall, that is a rare level of certainty.
The numbers behind that view are hard to miss. Moore has played 26 games with 20 starts in his first two seasons, putting up 79 tackles, seven interceptions, 18 pass breakups, three forced fumbles and one interception-return touchdown. He stepped into a larger role as a freshman after Benjamin Morrison's injury, then became a unanimous All-American as a sophomore even while missing two games. In that second season, he had five interceptions, including two against Boise State and a pick-six against Syracuse.
Scouting Grade has him fifth overall with a 95 grade, saying he fits a Round 1 range as a starting outside-corner candidate. Its 2025 sample gave Moore a 92.5 coverage grade, a 45.9 passer rating allowed and a 20.8 percent forced-incompletion rate. That is the sort of profile that makes evaluators comfortable naming him a top prospect before the season starts, but it is not the same as saying the case is finished.
His 2026 tape will still have to hold up. That is the part that keeps this projection from becoming a verdict. Moore is being judged against another full season of college football, and every week between the opener and December can either harden the belief that he belongs near the top of the board or give scouts a reason to separate him from the very top tier. For a cornerback, the margin is unforgiving: one season of good numbers can elevate a player, but the next season decides whether the NFL sees a stable elite or simply a fast start.
Moore's path to this point also explains why Notre Dame trusted him so quickly. The school recruited him in January 2023, he committed later that month after an unofficial visit, signed in December and enrolled in January 2024. Dr. Leonard N. The father’s academic background is part of the recruiting story, but the on-field answer has been the bigger one.
On3 lists Moore at an estimated NIL valuation of $1.2 million, a figure that tracks with his market value before the first whistle. But the real test starts against Wisconsin at Lambeau Field on NBC. If Moore looks like the same player he has been through two seasons, the draft talk around him will only get louder. If the 2026 season exposes cracks, the top-pick chatter will not disappear so much as become a debate. That is what this season is for.
