Seattle Reign hosted San Diego Wave on Sunday, Sept. 6, at Lumen Field with a rare blend of comfort and pressure. The home side came in on a four-game unbeaten run at home and had already beaten San Diego 2-0 at the end of July, but the visitors arrived higher in the table and with more points.
The match kicked off at 6 PM PT on ESPN2, with Seattle trying to turn a strong head-to-head record into another result that mattered in the standings. Seattle entered at 9-8-4 with 0 GD and in eighth place, while San Diego came in at 12-7-3 with a +7 GD in fourth, which made this more than a rematch from summer. It was a check on whether Seattle could keep narrowing the gap after winning 2-0 behind goals from Maddie Mercado and Jordyn Bugg, then following that up with a 1-0 home win over the Dash last weekend.
The absences shaped both sides before the first whistle. Lynn Biyendolo was out for Seattle because of maternity leave, and Emeri Adames, Ainsley McCammon and Evan O’Steen were away with the U-20 USWNT on international duty. San Diego were without Trinity Armstrong and Dudinha, both listed out with knee injuries, along with Jordan Fusco, Cat Macario and Kiki Pickett. Luisa Agudelo was also away on international duty with COL.
That left Seattle with the better all-time numbers, and the margin was not small: a 10-1-3 record against San Diego, a 5-0-1 home mark in the series, 20 goals scored and only 7 conceded. But the clean history was facing a current table that did not match it. San Diego had reached the night in fourth place and had just beaten Racing Louisville 3-2 after scoring three unanswered second-half goals, so the visitors brought form that made Seattle’s edge feel less secure than the numbers suggested.
Abdou Ndiaye was set as referee, and Jenn Hildreth and Lianne Sanderson were the ESPN2 broadcast crew. The next thing that mattered was the result itself, because this was already a season-series game, a standings game and a homestand game all at once.
